About the application and relocation process

As early as possible in your planning.

This helps avoid delays for your project and protect the nbn equipment.

Works generally take 50 business days or more to complete. However, timeframes can be much longer for more complex requests.

You need to submit details about the nbn assets you need relocated to help us assess your request. These include:

  • Photos of the nbn assets you need relocated or removed
  • Site plans or sketches showing the proposed new location
  • Any relevant Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) plans
  • Any relevant accredited plant locator plans
  • Supporting documents from other carriers (if shared infrastructure is involved)
  • Any additional information that helps explain the works required

We may reach out if we need additional information.

Yes, someone over the age of 18 needs to be present to provide access to your property, if needed.

There may be a short outage while nbn equipment is moved. We will give you advance notice so you can prepare.

About application costs

There are generally two fees involved for relocating nbn assets. They need to be paid before our works can begin. The fees can include:

  • A non-refundable application fee ranging from $550 to $2,750 (inc. GST)
  • A quote in the nbn Offer covering the cost for the relocation works

Each application is assessed individually and the costs are based on the complexity of the work. The application fee is deducted from the quote, if you choose to proceed.

More complex requests may need additional design or other assessments before we can confirm requirements and proceed. This can include projects involving council works, road authorities, infrastructure upgrades or major construction.

If the scope changes or new site information becomes available that affects the requirements, we’ll let you know if the quote needs to be updated.

Relocation Works are carried out when nbn’s assets need to be moved so a third party’s project can go ahead, such as building or development projects.

Because the relocation has been asked for by a third party, the costs for relocating nbn assets are paid by the person or organisation requesting the relocation.

Your nbn Offer remains valid for its full validity period.

If the scope changes or new site information becomes available that impacts the requirements, we’ll let you know if the quote needs to be updated.

Compliance requirements with local councils

We do not issue letters or written confirmation stating that proposed third party works will not impact the nbn network. Other telecommunications providers may provide a letter for their owned assets.

Before you start, it’s important to know what’s underground. You can use the free service from Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) to get the latest plans for your site and identify the location of any underground cables in your area.

For extra certainty, an accredited plant locator may help to confirm the presence and location of underground assets.

Please note, you don’t need to apply with us for works that can be completed fully within BYDA guidelines and there is no expected impact to nbn assets.

In some cases, you’ll need a Network Protection Plan (NPP) with us.

Some councils may ask that you get an approval from nbn about moving an nbn pit if your new proposed driveway is close to the original pit location.

In this situation, you can complete a relocation application with us. We will assess if the pit can remain in the original location or if it needs to be moved.

In some cases, the pit can be changed to a trafficable one without needing to relocate it. If this isn’t possible, we’ll let you know what your relocation options are.

Keep in mind that we can only help with our assets. They are often marked by nbn branding. Please contact other providers for requests about moving their assets.

You’ll need a Network Protection Plan (NPP) with us when:

  • Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) conditions cannot be met.
  • It’s expected that there will be impacts to nbn assets.
  • We have reviewed your existing request and advised that an NPP is required.

Please submit the relocation works application form and we can discuss the NPP requirements with you.

Other questions relating to nbn equipment

Contact your provider

If the nbn connection box or other equipment is missing or faulty, then please contact your service provider. They can help to arrange the installation of new equipment.

If you're making changes like removing walls or redesigning office layouts in your new location, your service provider can help determine if nbn can assist or whether a registered cabler is required.

Contact a registered cabler

A registered cabler can often help to move your nbn connection box or related cabling in properties connected to nbn Fixed Line technology. For example, moving the nbn connection box from one room to another.

nbn Fixed Line technology refers to Fibre to the Basement (FTTB), Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), Fibre to the Node (FTTN), Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC).

You can find a registered cabler through the Australian Registered Cablers website*.
