Momentum builds as work commences on the final stage of Fibre to the Node upgrade program
NBN Co today announced significant progress on the last stage of its Fibre to the Node (FTTN) upgrade program, with work underway for more than 228,000 homes and businesses across the country.
Announced in January 2025 and backed by an equity investment of up to $3 billion from the Australian Government, alongside more than $800 million from NBN Co, this program aims to provide full fibre upgrades to more than 95 per cent of the approximately 622,000 homes and businesses remaining on FTTN connections. More than half of these premises are in regional Australia.
nbn full fibre is faster and more reliable than FTTN connections, which uses ageing copper to deliver broadband services*. It enables access to nbn's residential fastest upload and download speeds, which enables more people and devices to be online at the same time with minimal disruptions. For households, this means smoother streaming, faster downloads, and more reliable video calls*. For businesses, it can mean better productivity, seamless cloud access, and stronger support for digital tools and services**.
This investment builds on NBN Co’s existing network upgrade programs and commitments, and the Company remains on track to enable 3.5 million FTTN eligible premises to upgrade to nbn full fibre by December this year. nbn’s broader network upgrade strategy will enable access to nbn’s fastest wholesale speed tiers to around 11 million homes and businesses, representing approximately 94 per cent of the nbn fixed line footprint by 2030. Already, more than 9.8 million premises can access these speeds.
NBN Co has published a list of suburbs and towns with homes and businesses eligible for upgrades under the funding announced in January 2025.

“We are making strong progress in upgrading the final 622,000 homes and businesses connected to the nbn® network via a copper-based Fibre to the Node technology, with work now underway from Port Douglas in Far North Queensland to Bayonet Head in South West WA — and in many other communities across Australia.
“This momentum builds on our existing fibre upgrade programs, which are enabling up to 11 million homes and businesses to access our fastest wholesale speed tiers by 2030.
“We’re seeing Australians embrace full fibre and high-speed tiers like never before.
“Fibre upgrades completed last financial year grew 115 per cent to 806,000 and we expect to hit the one million milestone before the end of the year.
“That is 430,000 upgrades completed in a single year, or almost 36,000 per month on average.
“The nbn network — and access to high-speed broadband — is a critical enabler of productivity, innovation and economic growth. It ensures that homes and businesses, whether in metropolitan centres or regional towns, can fully participate in the digital economy now and into the future.
“We are delivering these upgrades in close collaboration with our delivery partners and local councils to ensure minimal disruption. As construction progresses, we will continue to provide regular updates.”
