A further 1,090 locals can now connect to fast broadband

Farms, homes and businesses in communities served by eight sites can now switch to the National Broadband Network.

NBN Co’s fixed-wireless network is now available to around 1,090 families and businesses via the sites at the following locations:

·       Korora

·       South West Rocks (surrounds)

·       Billys Creek

·       Newee Creek

·       Lowanna

·       Ulong Town

·       Dorrigo

·       Stuarts Point (surrounds)

NBN Co’s spokesperson Tony Gibbs said the switch-on of the fixed-wireless service will bring better broadband to those living in the Mid North Coast region.

“For decades, rural and regional Australia has been left behind when it comes to telecommunications. The fixed wireless service is designed to provide access to internet speeds and bandwidth that many in the big cities currently take for granted,” Mr Gibbs said.

"The NBN also means you can get the whole family on line at once, opening up opportunities for local farms, businesses and the wider region to participate in the digital age. Fast broadband can help deliver improved access to health, education and entertainment over high quality video links.”*

Residents in these areas are encouraged to visit the NBN Co website to see if their home or business is included as part of the coverage footprint via the interactive map: www.nbnco.com.au/rollout/rollout-map

NBN Co’s fixed-wireless service offers wholesale download speeds of up to 25 megabits per second and wholesale upload speeds of up to 5 megabits per second to retail service providers.*

Families and businesses in the region who want to sign up should call their preferred local telephone and internet company to order a service today http://www.nbnco.com.au/get-an-nbn-connection/certified-service-providers.html

Notes to editors

  • Fixed wireless services are delivered by radio communications via antennas that transmit a signal direct to a small outdoor antenna on your home or business.
  • Before the network equipment is installed a service validation test will be carried out.
  • In fixed wireless areas copper phone lines will remain in place to provide a telephone service.
  • NBN Co’s fixed wireless and satellite networks will serve communities with low population density where it is impractical or uneconomical to roll out fixed line technologies.
  • A standard installation of network equipment is currently free of charge.

* NBN Co is designing the NBN to provide these speeds to NBN Co’s wholesale customers (internet service providers). Your experience, including the speeds actually achieved over the NBN depends on some factors outside NBN Co’s control like your equipment quality, software, broadband plans and how your service provider designs its network
