Administrative Access

Administrative access is a way for individuals to request and receive information from nbn without needing to make a formal Freedom of Information (FOI) request.

This approach supports open government by making access to information faster, simpler, and often free of charge.

How does Administrative Access work?

Administrative access allows nbn to provide certain types of information informally, outside the FOI Act 1982 (Cth). It is commonly used for:

  • Accessing your personal information (e.g. employee personnel or case files)
  • Information already published, but requested in a different format

We aim to use administrative access wherever it improves efficiency and helps the public engage with our work.

How does it relate to FOI?

Under section 3A(2) of the FOI Act, agencies are encouraged to release information administratively where appropriate. In some cases, such as requests for personnel records, section 15A requires applicants to use administrative processes first.

Administrative access is voluntary and flexible, but it does not replace the FOI process. If you’ve already submitted an FOI request, we will continue to process it under the FOI Act unless you agree to withdraw it.
