New technology speeds up NBN rollout
140 new suburbs mapped for fast broadband
NBN Co has revealed details of the first 140 suburbs set to receive fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) technology over the National Broadband Network (NBN).*
The company today released a list of areas where work is underway to bring the NBN to more than 200,000 homes and businesses in parts of the Central Coast, Newcastle and Lake Macquarie regions in New South Wales as well as the Greater Brisbane, Moreton Bay and Wide Bay Burnett regions in Queensland.
This is the next phase of a national trial to test the planning, design and construction of the FTTN technology which marries fibre optic cables with Telstra’s copper lines in a street side node cabinet to deliver fast broadband to homes and businesses.
NBN Co’s Chief Customer Officer, John Simon said:
“Today’s announcement is a progressive step in our move to a mix of broadband technologies which are designed to help us speed up the NBN rollout across the country.
“This means more than 200,000 Australian homes and businesses will able to take advantage of fast and reliable broadband sooner than expected, with these areas previously not earmarked to receive the NBN in the coming 12 months.
“The early experiences of consumers and businesses on our trials demonstrate that existing technologies are capable of playing a vital role in delivering the NBN quicker, more efficiently and more cost effectively for all Australians.”
NBN Co also announced today build preparation and construction work is underway to bring fast broadband to a further 37,000 homes and businesses across the country. This continues the momentum of the NBN rollout with work now underway to expand the network to more than 950,000 Australian homes and businesses. There are also more than a quarter of a million homes and businesses already connected to the NBN.

A Strategic Review carried out by NBN Co and completed in December 2013 recommended that the NBN could be rolled out faster and at a lower cost by combining proven technologies with existing capable networks.
Notes to editors:
- NBN Co is committed to fulfilling the Federal Government’s policy goal of ensuring all Australians have access to fast broadband as soon and as cost-effectively as possible, as set out in the Statement of Expectations to the company.
- NBN Co is planning a wide-scale commercial rollout of multiple technologies using existing networks in 2015. This is subject to reaching agreement with Telstra on changes to the Definitive Agreements.
- NBN Co's Integrated Product Roadmap indicates FTTN services are currently planned to be made available to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) by calendar Q3 2015 and fibre-to-the-basement (FTTB) in calendar Q1 2015.
- Physical construction to roll out the NBN has already commenced in and around Belmont in NSW with build preparation works underway in the other areas.
- On average it takes around 12 months from the start of construction until residents and business owners can receive NBN services from phone and internet providers.
- The interactive rollout map includes a detailed colour-coding system to display the three phases of the rollout within a community:
