More Australians are set to benefit from nbn’s most resilient, reliable and fastest residential connection technology thanks to strong progress in the expansion of fibre access to homes and businesses across the country.  

More than 99 per cent of the approximately 600,000 premises remaining in the Fibre to the Node (FTTN) upgrade program will now have access to an nbn Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) upgrade by December 2030. This has been revised from the 95 per cent estimate announced in January 2025 as detailed design work has progressed.  

The remaining FTTN upgrade program continues to build strong momentum nationwide, with more than 577,000 premises currently progressing through the detailed design stage. Around 254,000 of these designed premises are now under construction, of which, approximately 91,000 are now eligible to order a fibre upgrade, bringing the benefits of full fibre within reach for more Australians.

At the conclusion of this upgrade program by December 2030, more than 11 million homes and businesses are expected to be eligible to access multi-gigabit wholesale speeds, providing the digital foundations needed to support households, businesses and Australia's increasingly connected economy.

For households and businesses, access to full fibre means greater confidence in using bandwidth-intensive applications such as video conferencing, cloud services, online learning, telehealth, business operations and emerging technologies including artificial intelligence. The expansion of fibre access will help support Australia's growing digital economy and ensure communities can take advantage of future digital opportunities wherever they live and work.

There are now more than 7.8 million homes and businesses that have access to a fibre service and customers can check their eligibility for fibre upgrades by visiting the nbn website and entering their address.
