How to plan early with nbn

Get your development ready for nbn connectivity with these four steps.

Learn about the end-to-end process, and what's required from both you and nbn. You can also browse our FAQs for more information.

Given there are a number of different development types, we recommend you start planning early to help ensure the nbn network can be connected in time. nbn will endeavour to achieve these timeframes, but cannot guarantee them.

  • Small developments, such as sub-dividing a lot into two residential units - you should engage nbn a minimum of three months before the premises will be occupied, and while the building is being constructed.
  • All other developments, such as multi-dwelling units, commercial or new non-premises locations - you should engage nbn a minimum of six months before service connections are required.

To help with a timely connection, and to ensure the nbn infrastructure within your property boundary is built to meet our design guidelines, we recommend working with an nbn trained designer or installer.

An end customer’s experience, including the speeds actually achieved over the nbn broadband access network, depends on the nbn access network technology and configuration over which services are delivered to their premises, whether they are using the internet during the busy period, and some factors outside of nbn’s control (like their equipment quality, software, chosen broadband plan, signal reception, or how their provider designs its network).
