Our enduring commitment to gender equality

2-minute read

Discover how we’re striving to close the gender pay gap – and setting a benchmark for Australia’s telecommunications industry.

At nbn, we are committed to providing an inclusive work environment and equal opportunities for our people.

That includes closing the gender pay gap.

We aim to meet and exceed Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) standards – and are pleased to acknowledge our recent results in its latest gender pay gap report.

According to the WGEA report and methodology, nbn’s median gender pay gap for base salary currently stands at one per cent in favour of women, while the median gender pay gap for total remuneration is 1.3 per cent in favour of men.

As we strive for gender parity, our priority is clear: to elevate gender diversity in recruitment across all levels.

And, it’s worth noting, we’re not merely striving to make positive changes at nbn – we’re also setting a benchmark for Australia’s telecommunications industry.

How we’re doing it

At nbn, we’re committed to nurturing a robust pipeline of female talent, and ensuring equitable opportunities for development and advancement.

We have embedded equity at every stage of the employee journey, from ensuring diverse candidate pools in recruitment to conducting rigorous annual pay reviews.

We continue working towards our goal of females representing at least 40 per cent of senior management roles, and our proactive efforts have already led to great progress.

As of 31 December 2024, females make up 31.8 per cent of our workforce and 36.2 per cent of management roles.

We’ve also implemented dedicated recruitment programs to support individuals who identify as female in entering the telecommunications industry.

  • Connecting Women in Telco: This initiative has resulted in women making up 59 per cent of our Customer Field Technician traineeship program since 2022.
  • Empowering Women in Trades: This partnership supports our female talent in exploring career pathways within our Field Services team.
  • University of Technology Sydney’s Robotics Initiative: This internship program champions Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) with more than 62 per cent female representation.
  • nbn Graduate Program: This program targets 50 per cent female participation, inviting them to explore exciting careers in telecommunications.

What’s next

Our purpose to lift the digital capability of Australia hinges on harnessing the full potential of our workforce, and is central to our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) strategy and employee reference group network.

The strategy and network are a vehicle for nbn to provide programs that highlight and address the impact of systemic barriers, building a workforce of allies that fosters equity and inclusion in everything we do.

Ongoing collaboration with our external partners, industry groups, and organisational peers will empower us to collectively take meaningful actions towards achieving gender parity across Australia’s telecommunications industry.

By setting ambitious targets, implementing comprehensive programs and actively collaborating with industry peers, we’re dedicated in our mission to foster an equitable workplace.

Our approach will enable us to better understand and meet the needs of customers in homes and businesses across Australia, driving relevant and impactful solutions to ensure everyone gets a fair go when accessing services on the nbn® network.
