Demand for high-speed nbn skyrockets

2-minute read

Australians are racing to order high-speed nbn plans at an unprecedented rate following the launch of our ‘Accelerate Great’ program in September.

Our eagerly-anticipated Accelerate Great program launched in September this year boosted high-speed plans for nbn customers on Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) and full fibre connections, including up to five times faster wholesale download speeds, and more than double some wholesale upload speeds.

This has meant customers moving just one wholesale speed tier higher from a 50Mbps plan can now access 10 times faster wholesale download speeds, while triggering an upgrade to full fibre for eligible customers.

The program also introduced our fastest plans ever for residential and mass market business customers, with wholesale download speeds of 2,000Mbps.*

Unprecedented demand for higher speeds

Since launching on 14 September, customers across Australia have been ordering higher speed plans at the fastest rate we’ve ever seen – more than 12,300 orders per week. For eligible customers, ordering a fast nbn plan triggers an upgrade to Full Fibre to the Premises, as copper-based connections are not able to deliver the accelerated speeds.

This is 50 per cent faster than the same time last year, 8,200 per week, and contributed to more than 113,000 orders since launch.

The reach of our fibre network will continue to expand in the coming years, as nbn expects to provide upgrade paths to all remaining Fibre to the Node premises by the end of 2030.

Demand for our highest-speed tiers has also reached new heights with more than 9,500 orders for plans offering wholesale download speeds of 2,000Mbps.*

Record speeds across the nbn® network

More than two thirds (68 per cent) of all orders are now for wholesale download speeds of 100Mbps or above, and nearly a third (29 per cent) of all customers now have plans with wholesale download speeds of 500Mbps or faster. That’s a jump of 25 per cent since July 2025.

The percentage of full fibre customers on 500Mbps or higher has risen even faster, increasing from 9 per cent in July to 57 per cent in October, and from 5 per cent to 43 per cent for HFC customers over the same period.

Better understanding of in-home setup

It’s wonderful to see so many customers embracing speed plans that can handle the growing demand of their households, now and into the future.

It’s also encouraging to see so many seeking information to help ensure their equipment at home can handle their new speeds, as we’ve seen an 89 per cent increase in the use of our In-Home Optimisation Hub.

This is important because, before Accelerate Great, 61 per cent of residential nbn customers hadn’t updated their home internet setup in the past two years, and many older Wi-Fi routers can’t handle the accelerated speeds.

These measures indicate customers are recognising the importance of fast, reliable internet that can handle surging demands, and embracing connectivity that’s ready for the future – whatever the future holds.

* Speeds listed are wholesale speeds. They represent the maximum speeds nbn provides to internet providers. Your experience, including the speeds actually achieved, depends on the configuration over which services are delivered to your premises, whether you are using the internet during the busy periods, and some factors outside of nbn’s control (like your equipment quality and set-up, chosen broadband plan, age of device(s) and/or how your provider designs its network). Service availability including timing will depend on phone and internet providers offering nbn® Hyperfast and is subject to service qualification.
