The nbn^® network is not currently available in your building

We have made several attempts to initiate the process of establishing an nbn network connection to your building, however we have been unsuccessful in our engagement with the building’s authorised representative. Consequently, nbn does not currently plan to install a network connection to your building, unless we receive a request from the Owners’ Corporation.

If you currently use existing fixed line phone or internet services there are a number of implications to be aware of:

Critical copper services such as emergency lift phones and monitored fire alarm systems may be at risk of disconnection.*
Occupiers may not be able to continue to access other critical services connected to the existing Fixed Line networks such as medical alarms and emergency call systems, monitored security alarms and fax machines.^{^}
Existing fixed line services will be disconnected at a future date and occupiers will not be able to make phone calls or access the internet over the Fixed Line network unless the nbn supplied equipment is installed at the property. The disconnection of existing Fixed Line services will not affect occupier's ability to access phone and internet services over mobile networks.
Future requests for an nbn network connection will result in costs payable by the Owners Corporation and/or owners/occupiers.

However, if your phone and internet services are already provided via another fibre network, they will continue to operate as normal unless your provider advises otherwise.

nbn strongly recommends that you contact your current provider of phone and internet services, or visit www.nbn.com.au/switchoff for more information about whether your services will be impacted by the rollout of the nbn network.^#

Although most existing services will be replaced by the nbn network, there are some services that should not be impacted. These include those services provided over non-nbn fibre networks, as well as some services in some apartment complexes, and some business and Special Services. If you are currently receiving broadband services using one of these networks, your broadband services will not be disconnected and you do not need to move to the nbn network if you do not want to. nbn strongly recommends you contact your current phone and internet provider for more information.

Premises connected to the nbn^® network via nbn Fixed Wireless won't be disconnected from their existing phone and internet services by nbn.

If you want to keep your existing copper phone line active when you order a service over nbn Fixed Wireless, you should speak to your phone and internet provider at the time you place your order.

Planned technology

nbn Satellite*

Good news! It looks like your location may be eligible for the business nbn^® Satellite Service⁺. The business nbn Satellite Service is designed to support business-grade internet, data and voice services^§ to Australian businesses in remote and rural areas^{^}.

Premises identified by nbn as medium/large business premises are not to be serviced by nbn™ Sky Muster™ or nbn™ Sky Muster^™ Plus. The nbn™ Satellite product available to medium/large business premises is business nbn™ Satellite Service. If you’re interested in nbn™ Sky Muster™ or nbn™ Sky Muster™ Plus services or believe your premises has been incorrectly categorised please contact your phone and internet provider.

The business nbn Satellite Service provides voice support for VoIP carriage and is not a voice provider.

An end customer’s experience, including the speeds actually achieved over the nbn™ network, depends on the nbn™ access technology and configuration over which services are delivered to your premises, whether you are using the internet during the busy period, and some factors outside nbn’s control (like your equipment quality, software, broadband plan, signal reception and how your service provider designs its network).

National Broadband Network goes live on mainland Australia

Residents in Armidale NSW become first to be connected to the NBN

The city of Armidale in rural New South Wales today celebrated becoming the first centre in mainland Australia to receive the National Broadband Network.The Prime Minister presided over the switch-on of superfast fibre optic broadband services to selected Armidale residents at an official ceremony this morning.

The NBN will in the coming months enable an increasing number of residents, businesses, and medical and educational facilities in the Armidale First Release Site to receive broadband at speeds of up to 100 Megabits per second*.

Residents are progressively being connected to the network as part of customer trials by four telecommunications providers who have already completed the certification process: iiNet, Internode, iPrimus and Telstra.

The handful of Armidale customers who have been trialling the service over the past month now join those already connected to the network in Tasmania, where the three communities of Midway Point, Smithton and Scottsdale were brought online in August last year.

This test phase is a critical step in building the network, working with telecommunications providers and integrating our operating systems as we aim to provide the best possible service throughout the future rollout.

The launch featured demonstrations of education, health and business applications that will be enabled by the NBN as well as testimonials from some of the first Armidale customers connected to the network.

Mike Quigley, NBN Co Chief Executive, said: "Today marks a significant milestone in our national rollout. Residents in Armidale will be the first mainland Australians to experience the tremendous benefits of this vital communications infrastructure that will serve Australian homes, businesses, schools and hospitals for decades to come."

"It represents the collective efforts of many people, including our construction partner Silcar Communications, Armidale Dumaresq Council and the University of New England as well as business and community groups, local residents and the retail telecommunications companies."

Work on the NBN began in Armidale in August last year. The city is one of five first release sites on the Australian mainland. The other sites - Kiama/Minnamurra Downs, NSW; Townsville, Qld; Willunga, SA and Brunswick, Vic - will be connected when they begin customer testing in the coming months.

* The speeds actually experienced by end-users will depend on a number of factors including the retail broadband plan they choose, their equipment and their in-premises connection.

NOTES TO EDITORS

Armidale was selected as a First Release Site as it provided an ideal location for evaluating a build in a rural inland town and represents some of the diversity of the situations NBN Co will encounter across Australia in the volume rollout.
NBN Co announced the selection of Armidale and the four other First Release Sites in March last year.
The First Release Site of Armidale covers Approximately 4,882 Premises (including the University of New England) or 2,900 excluding the University.
The number of telecommunications providers offering services over the NBN as part of the trials is expected to increase to include AAPT, AARNnet, Comscentre, Exetel, Nextgen Networks, Optus, Platform Networks, SkyMesh and Vodafone, as these providers complete the certification process.
The NBN Co certification program is a process by which NBN co works with telecommunications providers to prepare them for accessing the network effectively and efficiently.
