Digital age offers hope for the Australian dream

nbn’s research reveals the nation’s top unfulfilled life goals

Launching today, the nbnTM Digital Dream Report, has found that financial freedom, having a better work-life balance, gaining more life experiences and prioritising relationships are at the top of the nation’s life goal checklists.

The majority of Australians (93 per cent) surveyed admit to having not fulfilled at least one of their goals with experts claiming access to fast broadband and new technologies will us to help achieve our lifelong ambitions.

The research also reveals our goals change as we get older with Baby Boomers prioritising weight loss (42 per cent), Gen X aiming to become debt free (46 per cent) and Gen Y most concerned about being able to own their own home (52 per cent). However, over one third of all Australians (33 per cent) agree connectivity could assist them in fulfilling their goals.

Life coach, Wellness Entrepreneur and busy mother of two, Lyndall Mitchell says:

“Technology and access to fast broadband is redefining the way we go about achieving the ‘Great Aussie Dream’. No matter what age we are, increased connectivity means we are able to harness the latest online tools to turn our lifestyle hopes and aspirations into reality. Whether it’s starting an online business, or connecting with family online to experience life’s precious moments, we no longer have excuses to compromise any of the key ingredients in achieving our ideal lifestyle.

“As a busy working mother of two l know what its like to juggle a career and a family and long for that perfect balance. By harnessing the latest technology at home and at work, I have been able to grow from a solo-consultant to running wellness retreats in four locations across Australia. With every Australian home set to get access to the nbnTM network, even the most remotely located Aussies can chart new paths to get closer to achieving their lifestyle goals.”

The nbnTM Digital Dream Report reveals the top unachieved life goals on the nation’s checklists:

1.    Find balance and become financially free – topping the wish list above all else is the desire to be debt free (42 per cent) with over a third of Aussies longing to own their own home (34 per cent). Now with access to fast broadband, Aussies can make an e-change out of the city to more affordable regional areas, while staying connected to family and friends.

2.    Upskill and become an expert – Aussies are still striving to achieve work-life balance (27 per cent); with access to fast broadband and flexible working arrangements, working from home is allowing the nation to cut down on commute times. Just under one in six Australians want to become an expert in their field (14 per cent); now with online education courses enabling people to up-skill from their loungeroom, the playing field is more even than ever – whether you live in the city or regionally.

3.    Prioritise relationships – finding that perfect life partner is still on the list for some Aussies (18 per cent) as is keeping in touch with old friends (13 per cent); thanks to social media, video chat applications and the plethora of online dating sites, finding that special loved one and keeping up-to-date with friends all over the country can now be done online.

4.    Be there for life experiences – as a nation we are missing out on key life events such as seeing loved ones get married (13 per cent) and raising a family (14 per cent); with increased access to fast broadband at home, witnessing a child’s first steps or hearing a loved one say ‘I do’ is a possibility thanks to high definition video conferencing.

There are almost 3 million homes and businesses around the country which can already connect to the nbn™ network with every Australian set to have access by 2020.

Notes to editors

  • nbn is building a new and upgraded, fast wholesale broadband network to enable communities across Australia to access fast broadband from their retail service provider. Our goal is to connect eight million homes and businesses by 2020.
  • The consumer research included in this press release was commissioned by nbn and developed by Evolve Research, with an Australian sample size of 2,100 Australians across every state and territory in June 2016.
  • Fast broadband like that delivered via the nbn™ network can provide a range of benefits for Australians such as opportunities to work from home, access to online education tools and options for on-demand entertainment.
  • End-user experience, including the speeds actually achieved over the nbn™ network, depends on the technology over which services are delivered to your premises and some factors outside our control like equipment quality, software, broadband plans, signal reception and how the end-user’s service provider designs its network. Access to your work network will depend on factors outside our control like your organisation’s IT policy and infrastructure.
