[Narrator] Streaming is now one of Australia's most popular forms of household entertainment. 4K, also known as Ultra HD, is now a standard for TVs and is becoming more common for phones, computer monitors, and security cameras. Your internet connection plays a significant role in your streaming experience.

What devices do you have and how many?

Australian households often have more internet-connected devices than you might expect-phones, computers, gaming systems, tablets, smart speakers, baby monitors, and even dishwashers. All these devices use internet data, so when they're all connected to your home network, your 4K streaming experience can be impacted.

What is 4K?

4K refers to a sharper quality image with a pixel count four times larger than high definition (HD). While this increased resolution means a better picture, it also means more data is required when streaming live sport or your favorite show. Some streaming services recommend 4K data download speeds that are three to five times faster than those required for HD.

Every home connection has a data bandwidth limit-the maximum amount of data that can be transmitted over your internet connection at any given time. Think of your home connection's bandwidth as a tunnel and data as cars moving through it: the bigger the tunnel, the more cars can flow without congestion. Similarly, higher bandwidth allows your connection to handle more large downloads, streaming, video calls, and more at once.

When you're streaming in 4K, data isn't always steady-it often moves in bursts, like surges in car traffic. For example, if you rewind a moment on your TV stream while another device is downloading a large update and someone else is on a video call, your tunnel fills up with a surge of cars, like rush hour traffic. On lower speed plans, this burst in data can be too much, causing a traffic jam. The effect on your TV stream can be longer loading times, buffering, temporarily reduced resolution, or compression artifacts. On higher speed plans, your much larger tunnel can handle the surge. For example, when you rewind your 4K stream on the fastest NBN wholesale plan, it is designed to work almost instantly, minimizing interruptions.

[Narrator] To stream in 4K, most platforms recommend a minimum of 15-25 Mbps per device, but this is just the baseline. In busy households with multiple devices, a plan of at least 50 Mbps is recommended to ensure smooth, uninterrupted streaming.

^Your experience, including the speeds actually achieved, depends on the configuration over which services are delivered to your premises, whether you are using the internet during the busy periods, and some factors outside of nbn’s control (like your equipment quality and set-up, chosen broadband plan, age of device(s) and/or how your provider designs its network). The activities supported by each nbn speed tier may also be impacted by a number of factors (and could be degraded depending on the number of people online at the same time, and your nbn access technology). Activities and timeframes described are based on testing conducted in nbn product labs of nbn wholesale HFC and FTTP products, at the retail level based on the peak achievable speed of that speed tier.

#Not all providers offer plans based on the full range of wholesale speed tiers. Talk to your preferred provider for more information about availability and the right retail solution for your needs.
