How do I choose the best location for the nbn™ supplied equipment?

Considerations for FTTN and FTTB

To prepare for your move to the new nbn™ network when it is available in your area, set up your VDSL2 compatible modem using the instructions provided by your service provider.

This modem should have been supplied by your service provider or, if you already have a modem, it must be VDSL2 compatible for it to work over the nbn™ network.

Where should my modem go inside my premises?

Your new modem will connect to your existing telephone wall socket, so you’ll need to find a place close to this.

Do I require an appointment with a technician?

Your service provider will advise you based on your circumstances.

Considerations for FTTP

Before your installation appointment, you will need to think about where you want the nbn™ connection box and power supply to be installed inside your house.

Use this checklist to help you pick the best location:

  • Reasonably close to a power point.
  • A cool, dry, ventilated area (nbn™ network supplied equipment cannot be installed in a damp or wet area such as a kitchen, bathroom, laundry or under a window that opens).
  • Away from busy areas where it may be knocked or damaged.
  • Somewhere easy for you to see and to check the indicator lights.
  • In the same building as the main electric meter box or distribution board (i.e. not in a separate detached garage or outhouse).

Considerations for the Fixed Wireless

Before the installation, you’ll need to consider a couple of possible options where you want the nbn™ Connection box (also referred to as a wireless network termination device indoor unit or W-NTD indoor unit) and an outdoor nbn™ Antenna (also referred to as a wireless network termination device outdoor unit or W-NTD outdoor unit) to be installed.

The nbn™ Connection box should ideally be installed:

  • Near an accessible power point
  • In a cool dry, ventilated area (e.g. not a cupboard or in a bathroom or kitchen).
  • Away from busy areas where it may be knocked and damaged.
  • Near your existing phone or network cabling.

You’ll also need to consider how you want to connect your devices inside your home such as computers, routers or modems, smartphones, tablets, landline phones and internet TV boxes.

The nbn™ Connection box features a number of bright flashing lights. Installation in areas such as bedrooms or near a TV screen is not recommended as the lights can be distracting.

The outdoor nbn™ Antenna should ideally be installed on your roof or an external wall, at a point where there is minimal obstruction between the antenna and the nbn™ Tower. Keep in mind that things like trees and hills can block the signal.

Considerations for Sky Muster™

You’ll need to think about where you want the nbn™ supplied modem to be installed on a wall inside your house near an accessible power point.

The ideal place will be:

  • In a cool, dry ventilated area
  • Away from busy areas where it may be knocked and damaged

You’ll also need to consider how you want to connect your devices (computers, smartphones, tablets and fixed phones) and if you plan to use voice over IP.

Please note that as a Sky Muster™ satellite user you also have the option of retaining a copper landline telephone. Please talk to your internet provider before your installation date about options for in-premises networking as this isn’t included in the installation. Many internet providers also offer a wi-fi option for networking.
