NBN Co Statement: Optus Sport World Cup streaming not related to NBN

19 June 2018

NBN Co, the company rolling out Australia’s broadband network, strongly refutes today’s Daily Telegraph Editorial’s suggestion that quality of service problems experienced by some users of the Optus Sport service for World Cup football coverage could be connected to the operation of the nbn access network.

NBN Co notes that Optus management have not sought to link the problems experienced by users of the Optus Sport application to issues involving the nbn access network.

Optus officials have also publicly acknowledged the recent Optus Sport quality of service problems arose from their delivery of the service.

NBN Co also notes that many end-users have noted on social media and other platforms that their nbn or other broadband connection was working well and yet they still had problems watching the Optus Sport content.

Average usage on the nbn access network is now over 200GB per end-user premises per month and congestion on the nbn network is now below 20 minutes per end-user per week

In its initial Measuring Broadband Australia program the ACCC found that nbn broadband services from iiNet, Optus, Telstra and TPG were delivering between 80 and just over 90 per cent of the maximum plan speeds in the evening busy hours.

NBN Co has previously pointed out in our Blog section that there are a number of different factors which will impact quality of service when end-users are streaming online content.
