Smarter Aussies by 2021: Connected devices set to rise by 124 per cent

09 May 2017

nbn’s Executive General Manager, Product and Pricing, Sarah Palmer said:

  • Telsyte’s Australian IoT@Home Market Study 2017 report, released today shows Aussies are set to become even more connected with the use of smart devices expected to rise by 124 per cent as the average household amount grows from 13.7 in 2017 to 30.7 in 2021.

  • With more than 310 million devices at home expected to be connected to the internet by 2021, Australian households will increasingly rely on fast broadband powered by the nbn™ network to simultaneously run quality sensor-based home automation systems and apps on everything from their light bulbs and power outlets to their washing machines and fridges.

  • Homes connected to services powered by the nbn™ network are currently downloading around 144GB of data each month which is a 32 per cent year-on-year increase and around 1.2 times the national fixed-line average and 76 times the mobile average.

  • It’s important for busy households which have a lot of smart devices and apps to speak with their service provider and choose a plan which suits their needs as well as check they have the correct in-home equipment so they can enjoy the best internet experience possible.

  • The nbn network™ currently is available to almost one in two Australians, is scheduled to be three quarters built by mid-next year and available to the entire nation by 2020.
