First local NBN fibre optic cable installed in Dapto
Superfast broadband a step closer for more Illawarra families
NBN Co today installed the first local fibre optic cable in Dapto as the rollout of the National Broadband Network widens across more parts of the Illawarra.
The green fibre, which links the Dapto exchange on Marshall Street to the local area, was hauled today in Byamee Street, Dapto.
“Families and businesses are expected to be able to start connecting to the NBN in 2014.
“Today’s fibre haul here in Dapto marks an important step in the rollout of the NBN in the Illawarra and marks one of the vital phases in the construction process,” NBN Co spokesperson Darren Rudd said.
“The construction today shows work is underway to build the network, which will provide super-fast broadband to Dapto.
“Construction work has already commenced on rolling out the NBN right across New South Wales, including more than 45,000 premises in the Illawarra.^ In Kiama the network now passes 6,500 premises where people can order services from 40 phone and internet service providers.
“In addition to the work underway to connect parts of Dapto and the surrounding suburbs of Horsley, Brownsville, Penrose and Kanahooka, work is in planning or construction in the following suburbs: Central Wollongong, West Wollongong, Mount Keira, Kieraville, Mangerton, Corrimal, Russle Vale, Bellambi, East Corrimal, Tarrawanna and Fernhill. NBN Co is aiming for construction in parts of these areas to be completed over the next 12 to 14 months.
“By mid-2016 construction is set to have commenced or be completed for more than 1.4 million premises across New South Wales.
“The NBN is being designed to provide the infrastructure to transform the way Australians communicate and keep in touch with each other, how they access education and health services, leverage e-business opportunities and immerse themselves in culture from around the world.
“Once a street has access to the NBN, home and business owners will be informed and are then encouraged to contact their phone or internet service provider to see how they can get connected to services over the NBN,” Mr Rudd said.

^ Construction commenced means that NBN Co has issued contract instruction to its construction partners, so they can commence work on the detailed design, field inspections and rodding / roping activities in an area.
