Transforming telecommunications in Australia

In 2009, the then Federal Government initiated what has become the largest transformation of Australia’s telecommunications industry: the introduction of a national broadband network.

In 2013, the now Federal Government reinforced its support for the introduction of a national broadband network.

With its bold goal to help deliver fast broadband access to all Australians, the remit has not been without its challenges over the almost 10-year (to date) journey.

Few, however, disagree that this industry disruption is a necessary evil that will lead to universal connectivity to fast broadband in Australia, now considered along with water and electricity, an essential service.

Reflecting on what led to the need for this transformation, Bill Morrow – NBN Co Chief Executive Officer – discusses the causation, the challenges and the impacts on those already connected.
