NBN Co adds to construction capacity in South Australia

15 July 2013

SA Power Networks awarded construction contract

NBN Co has awarded SA Power Networks a three-year contract to roll out fibre optic broadband in an area covering approximately 300,000 premises in Adelaide and regional South Australia. The contract includes options to extend by two further periods of one year each.

The contract will see SA Power Networks design and construct the local and distribution network that runs fibre from a local communications exchange (fibre access node or FAN) through each street in a coverage area.

Up to 400 people will be working on the contract at peak.

It is the second NBN construction contract to be awarded in the state. Syntheo, a consortium comprising Lend Lease and Service Stream, was granted a two-year contract for the rollout of fibre in South Australia in November 2011.

SA Power Networks, formerly known as ETSA Utilities, built the NBN first release site in Willunga, 47 kilometres from Adelaide near the McLaren Vale. At the start of June, 63.4 per cent of eligible residents in Willunga were active on the NBN. The average take-up for fibre locations active for more than six months is more than 30 per cent.

NBN Co aims to deliver infrastructure for fast, reliable and affordable broadband to every Australian family and business by 2021. Up to 93 per cent are to receive a fibre optic connection, and with satellite and fixed wireless to be delivered to rural and remote areas.
