Katherine meets the nbn™ network

As the nbn™ network starts to roll into Katherine, we shine the spotlight on a town well known for its natural attractions.

Towns and cities all across Australia are connecting to the nbn™ network, so we’re celebrating the historic moments, landmarks or features that put each area on the map.

Known for its history and cultural heritage, Katherine is situated 320km South East of Darwin and boasts spectacular rugged terrain and breathtaking natural beauty.

One of the town’s most notable places to visit is the Nitmiluk (previously named Katherine Gorge) National Park.

Known for its cascading waterfalls and traditional Aboriginal art, locals and visitors alike can soak up the gorgeous surrounds or get adventurous with some hiking, canoeing and boating.

Leliyn (Edith Falls) is another town draw card within the National Park, with picturesque waterfalls that flow all year round.

This spot is great for swimming in the summer heat, picnics and camping – it’s also reportedly one of the few croc-free swimming holes in the area, although it’s always important to be cautious and read signs before swimming anywhere in the Top End!

For something more peaceful, a trip to Katherine’s hot springs won’t disappoint. Averaging at a natural temperature of 32 degrees, the town council has invested in transforming this river bed hole into a relaxing, recreational area for all to enjoy.

Katherine has a humble yet thriving town centre and is home to around 10,000 locals. The area also houses one of the most well known Schools Of The Air – a school for geographically isolated distance education students in Australia.

In fact, the school was the first to gain their own radio frequency back in 1966 and is now able to be connect to services over the nbn™ network.

This will afford students, particularly in the later grades, opportunities to interact with teachers across the country via video conferencing and offer better access to subjects and participation in studies such as STEM learning sessions through interactive, online programs.*

As the nbn™ network rolls out, the residents of Katherine can look forward to connecting over fast and reliable internet which has the potential to help the local community, schools and businesses thrive.

In our next series we travel to Mount Eliza. Check out our On the Map homepage for more.
