The digital economy has the potential to transform every aspect of our lives including business, health, education and government services. The means to unlock this potential is broadband, the core infrastructure of the new century.
Broadband allows end users fast, 'always-on' online access to digital content, applications and a range of services which can occur simultaneously. Broadband access enables consumers to take full advantage of new communication tools and next generation applications.
The National Broadband Network (NBN) to be designed, built and operated by NBN Co will provide the enabling infrastructure to help Australia realise its digital potential.
The NBN will be Australia’s first national wholesale-only open access, high speed broadband platform.
Retailers will be able to access the NBN in order to provide services and content to the general public and business.
The NBN will connect 93% of all Australian premises with fibre-based services with 7% connected with next generation wireless and satellite technologies, subject to final design.
NBN Co will give equal access to the NBN by access seekers such as retail service providers (RSP's) enabling access seekers to offer services which will provide consumers with advanced digital services and applications.
Combined, these technologies will provide a superfast, national broadband network that will serve Australia for decades to come.
